Frequently Asked

In the beginning . . .

Since the age of six I can remember our mother taking my brother and me to the Greenville SC dog show. We didn’t have show dogs but she had always wanted a collie (this was the Lassie era) and so we never missed an opportunity to go the dog show.  I would stand at the Afgan Hound ring and love to watch them sail around the ring with their beautiful long coats.  Like it was yesterday, I remember telling my mother I was going to be in that ring one day.

The Sheltie

The Shetland Sheepdog is a small, highly intelligent, alert, rough-coated, longhaired herding dog. He must be sound to work the farm and earn his confirmation championship, but agile enough to excel in agility. The outline should be so symmetrical that no part appears out of proportion to the whole.  This is a hard working little dog and the most loyal and loving companion you will find anywhere.

"Debbi Kaplan picked the perfect puppy for us when she gave us Ashley. Ashley is well bred and has the attributes I need in a competitive dog. She is a true competitor; quickly learns new skills, wants to please, has drive and doesn’t get frustrated when she is learning new skills. Ashley competes in AKC, UKC and CPE. She earned her UKC conformation champion title before turning a year old. Her favorite activities are Fast CAT (holds the FCAT title) and AKC Scent Work titles (Novice Elite and Advanced titles) and UKC (working at the Superior level). She wants to please. Ashley has good house manners and has been a good playmate with our other two female Shelties; one is four years older and the other is 11 years older. She is the most loveable Sheltie we have ever had and the most expressive. " - Cathie S

"I purchased a beautiful Blue Merle puppy from Debbi in March of 2022. Debbi was friendly, knowledgeable and professional. She went above and beyond allowing us to visit and see each puppy in their stages of development and even after we welcomed our sweet boy Dansby home, Debbi continued to be a part of our lives and truly modeled the care and concern you only see in the best breeders. Not only did we gain a beautiful sheltie, but also a friend. " - Michelle

"I highly recommend Bel Cher Shelties for anyone interested in healthy shelties with good dispositions! I adopted Mac from Debbi five years ago. He is a wonderful, smart, and kind dog! Two years later, I adopted Jamey from Bel Cher Shelties. Jamey has been a wonderful dog, too! He is very smart and sweet with a talent for agility! Together, we enjoy going to parks and taking trips as well as staying at home. " - Rose

"We have two wonderful Shetland Sheepdogs we got from Debbi at Bel Cher Shelties as pets. Benny is a 4-year-old bi-black male with a wonderful personality. When Benny was about 2.5 years old, I talked to Debbi, who suggested that it would be good for Benny to have a pal. Given our experience with Benny, it didn’t take much to twist our arms. So now we also have Henry, who recently had his first birthday. Benny and Henry are big-time buddies. We couldn’t be more pleased with both dogs. Debbi continues to be a support to answer our questions and help when needed (e.g. training the ears!). " - John and Jo

It has been my pleasure to work with sheltie breeder Debbie Kaplan of "Bel Cher" Shetland Sheepdogs. I was lucky enough to purchase a pet sheltie puppy from Mrs. Kaplan and it has been an extremely positive experience.  My new sheltie puppy is my twelfth sheltie over the last fifty-five years - I really like my shelties.  I chose the Bel Cher kennel for many reasons. My visitation to the kennel showed me that it was the result of a very professional and experienced breeder with a true passion for improving the sheltie breed.  The kennel itself was spotless, the dogs in residence beautifully cared for, the mom of the litter well tempered, and the puppies raised in the breeder's home.  The puppies of the litter were athletic, curious, and very well socialized. In the time I have had my puppy, she is a hit with all my friends and shows promise of being a very smart and well adjusted adult. (Our first visit to an assisted living facility with my puppy was a resounding success. I love all of my past and present shelties, but not all could manage to be a therapy dogs.) After only a month, my puppy is retrieving the frisbee, housebroken, and already great friends with my other two adult shelties.  My veterinarian is very impressed with her health and temperament.  It is really not surprising that my puppy is so well bred = Mrs. Kaplan is respected by fellow sheltie breeders with forty years experience. She does genetic testing to eliminate unforeseen breeding problems. When I read the detailed purchase contract from Mrs Kaplan, I knew I was dealing with a breeder for the welfare of the puppies she placed was of foremost importance.  In summary, I could not be happier with my new puppy and highly recommend Bel Cher!  (if anyone wants to hear more praise of Mrs Kaplan and Bel Cher, feel free to telephone me for more praise - 225-328-8586 / Kathy Textor
